It's said that the even the best laid battle plan goes out the window once the fighting begins. Such is the case with the investigation into making our drawer base with three super-wide drawers. It looked good onscreen, but in reality there was too much chance of it being rickety over time and in the home of a client expecting a solid piece I didn't think it was wise. I could have gotten heavier slides, but no time for all that. We've got to get this show on the road!

I got four of the six drawers assembled but ran out of time and still needing a small piece of birch to finish the final two, I was ready to let my hands rest. I've been pushing pencils and keyboard keys for a while and the ol' back and hands are getting a workout.

So, to recap I've split the base into two banks of three drawers. The drawers are about 21" wide by 22" deep and 7" high inside the box. The sides are made from 3/4" 15-ply birch and the bottoms are made from 1/2" birch plywood both prefinished with clear UV-resistant finish. We'll either sand and coat the exposed edges or edge-band them. The plan is to use face-frames of poplar over the base and casing for the shelves. The shelves themselves will be birch plywood with poplar accent as well.

It's been windy and wet intermittently, but warm here and there as well with a bit of sun making it nice to work out there on the sawhorses. After fitting the drawers and slides together in the box to confirm fit, I'll remove everything and spray a couple coats of primer inside the carcasses, then affix the backs and staple them on. Finally, putting the drawers back in and transporting to their installation location. It'll be done before you know it, and I'll be like, "did that really just happen?"
